Afghan War Casualty Report: June 01- 30

The following report compiles all significant security incidents confirmed by Afghanistan Strategic & policy Studies Organization (ASPSO) reporters throughout Afghanistan from the past one month. It is necessarily incomplete as many local officials refuse to confirm casualty information. The report includes government claims of insurgent casualty figures, but in most cases these cannot be independently verified by The Times. Similarly, the reports do not include Taliban claims for their attacks on the government unless they can be verified. Both sides routinely inflate casualty totals for their opponents.

At least 750 pro-government forces and 300 civilians were killed in Afghanistan during the past month. Casualties among pro-government forces increased compared to last month, as the Taliban intensified their attacks in some parts of the country. The deadliest attack took place in Herat Province, where the Taliban attacked security outposts in the center of Gulran District. Helicopters were sent to medevac casualties, but they were not able to land. Six soldiers and three police officers were killed; three soldiers and two police officers, including the district police chief, were wounded. One soldier and two police officers were taken prisoner by the Taliban. Separately, two American soldiers were killed during a military operation, bringing to nine the number of U.S. military fatalities in the country this year. The soldiers were killed by small-arms fire in southern Uruzgan Province, American defense officials said. They were engaged in a fierce firefight with Taliban militants, with combatant’s only yards apart at one point, 

June 30 Paktia Province: 21 public protection forces killed

The Taliban attacked a series of check posts and the headquarters of Afghan Public Protection Forces in the Machalgho area of Ahmad Aba District. Twenty-one members of the Afghan Public Protection Forces were killed and 16 more were wounded.

June 30 Paktia Province: five soldiers killed

A group of Taliban attacked an Afghan army outpost in Lwari area of Chamkani District. Five soldiers were killed and three others were wounded.

June 30 Takhar Province: five police officers killed

An Afghan police Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb in Taliqan City that killed five police officers.

June 30 Kunduz Province: 23 security forces killed

The Taliban attacked Qurghan Tepa military base and two checkpoints in Imam Sahib District. During the clashes, eight border soldiers and five local police were killed, eight border soldiers were wounded and 13 border soldiers and three local police officers were arrested by the Taliban. The Taliban captured the military base and two local police checkpoints, but reinforcements were sent to the area.

June 30 Faryab Province: two police officers killed

The Taliban attacked Qaramqul District center. The Taliban captured one outpost near police headquarters. Two police officers were killed and 12 others were wounded.

June 30 Balkh Province: 14 security forces killed

At midnight, the Taliban attacked Bodana Qala village security outpost in Sholgara District, where fighting continued for three hours. During the clashes, one soldier and one local police officer were killed and three others were wounded. When the Taliban were leaving the area, they were hit by American airstrikes.

June 30 Kunduz Province: one soldier killed

The Taliban attacked a military base in Chaharsari area along Takhar-Kunduz highway. Reinforcements were sent to the area and pushed back them. During two hours of clashes, one soldier was killed and two others were wounded.

June 30 Faryab Province: two security forces killed

More than 100 Taliban members attacked security outposts in Gorziwan District. During two hours of fighting, the district police chief and a commando were killed and two security forces were wounded.

June 30 Kandahar Province: 56 police officers and eight civilians killed

The Taliban conducted an attack on a military base in Maruf District center and then moved to Bato area. The Taliban first rammed a Humvee loaded with explosives into the wall of the base. Fighters then drove a stolen police pickup truck filled with explosives into the base, which was followed by shooting of light and heavy weapons. Forty-five of the 60 police officers inside the base were killed. Eight Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan employees were also reportedly killed.

June 29 Ghor Province: five security forces killed

The Taliban killed one police officer and four local police in Shahrak District. Four local police were wounded in this attack.

June 29 Baghlan Province: 45 pro-government militia members killed

The Taliban fighters killed 25 pro-government militia members and wounded eight others in Nahrin District.

June 29 Balkh Province: two police officers killed

The Taliban attacked Jar-e-Khoshk village security outpost in Koshenda District at 12:30 a.m. and fighting continued for two hours. Reinforcements were sent to the area and pushed back the Taliban attack. During the clashes, two police officers were killed and two others were wounded.

June 29 Takhar Province: one civilian killed

A local police officer killed a farmer and wounded his brother in Nawabad village of Dashte Qala District after the farmer refused to pay a tax to the local police.

June 29 Farah Province: three soldiers killed

The Taliban ambushed Afghan army forces in Sewan area of Balaboluk District, killing three soldiers and wounding two others.

June 29 Kandahar Province: 28 police officers killed

The Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in the Mulahid village of Takhtapol District. Local officials said that 14 police officers were killed and the checkpoint was overrun by the Taliban. Officials said they have sent an investigation team to find out more about the incident.

June 28 Paktia Province: two police officers killed

The Taliban attacked Kamari checkpoints in the Machalgho area of Ahmad Aba District, killing two civil order police officers and wounding three others.

June 28 Paktia Province: two civilians killed

Afghan forces carried out an operation in the Saro Khail area of Garda Serai District, killing two civilians, according to local officials.

June 28 Helmand Province: 13 police officer killed

The Taliban attacked one police check post in Nawa District, killing one police officer and wounding one other.

June 28 Helmand Province: 5 police officer killed

The Taliban attacked a police unit on patrol in Grimser District, killing one officer and wounding two others.

June 28 Sar-e-Pul Province: 17 pro-government militia members killed

Pro-government militias were ambushed by the Taliban in the Pahlwan Tashi village of Sozma Qala District. During two hours of clashes, three pro-government militia members, including a militia commander, were killed.

June 28 Ghazni Province: 8 police officers killed

The Taliban attacked Deh Yak District, killing four police officers and wounding two others. The Taliban were pushed back from the district.

June 28 Kunduz Province: 5 police officer killed

A police officer was killed by the Taliban in Kunduz City’s Second Police District while he was transporting food from one checkpoint to another. The Taliban also seized his weapon.

June 28 Daikundi Province: eight pro-government militia members killed

The Taliban attacked security force checkpoints in Kijran District, killing eight local police officers and wounded 16 other national police, local militia members and local police.

June 27 Helmand Province: 13 civilians killed

A civilian vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in Greshk District. Two civilians were killed and four others were wounded.

June 27 Farah Province: three soldiers and one police officer killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in the Diak village of Farah City, the provincial capital, killing one police officer and wounding two others. Casualties only increased after the arrival of reinforcements, as the Taliban ambushed three military vehicles approaching the area. Three soldiers were killed and three military vehicles were destroyed. The Taliban continue to attack security forces at the outskirts of the provincial capital almost every night.

June 27 Jowzjan Province: one pro-government militia member killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in the Mangoti village of Sheberghan City, the provincial capital, killing one pro-government militia member during two hours of fighting. The Taliban fled from the area after the arrival of reinforcements, seizing the motorcycles of two militia members.

June 27 Kandahar Province: 14 police officers killed

The Taliban attacked police outposts in the Dabkarez area of Khakrez District, killing four police officers and wounding two others during an hour of fighting. Local authorities claimed that 15 Taliban fighters, including one of their commanders, were killed in the fighting.

June 26 Uruzgan Province: two American soldiers killed

Two United States soldiers were killed during a military operation,  the number of American military fatalities in the country this year. The two, part of a Special Forces team, were killed by small-arms fire in southern Uruzgan province, American defense officials said. The soldiers were engaged in a fierce firefight with Taliban militants, with combatants only yards apart at one point, one of the defense officials said.

June 26 Badghis Province: 5 N.D.S. member killed

During a Taliban ambush in the Qadis District, one member of the National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, was killed.

June 26 Ghazni Province: two police killed

A roadside bomb hit the vehicle of Qadir Shah, the police chief of the Khogyani district, killing him and another police officer. Three police officers were also wounded.

June 26 Samangan Province: one pro-government militia member killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in Dara-i-Suf Payan District, where fighting continued for five hours. One pro-government militia member was killed and another was wounded. The Taliban were eventually pushed back.

June 26 Samangan Province: two police killed

Around 80 Taliban fighters attacked and captured a security outpost in the Taqchi village of Dar-i-Sof Bala, where 11 police officers were stationed. Two police officers were killed and another was wounded. The outpost was later recaptured after the arrival of reinforcements for backup.

June 26 Balkh Province: 7 local police killed

The Taliban attacked the village of Siah Aab in Sholgara District, killing one local police officer. After four hours of fighting the Taliban’s attack was repelled.

June 26 Zabul Province: four soldiers killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in Shinky District, killing four soldiers. Four police officers and a member of the National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, were wounded in the clashes, which went on for several hours.

June 26 Zabul Province: 13 police officers killed

The Taliban attacked a police outpost in Arghandab District, killing two police officers and wounding four others. Local authorities claimed that the Taliban suffered casualties in the attack but didn’t provide exact figures.

June 26 Herat Province: nine security forces killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in the center of Gulran District, where clashes continued for several hours. Some helicopters were sent to the area for support and to airlift the dead, but they were not able to land due to Taliban fire. A number of wounded soldiers died because they did not receive medical attention in time. Six soldiers and three police officers were killed, while three soldiers and two police officers, including the district police chief, were wounded. One soldier and two police officers were taken prisoner by the Taliban. Local officials claimed that three Taliban members were killed and seven others were wounded in the clashes.

June 26 Farah Province: three police killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost at the entrance of Farah City, the provincial capital, killing three police officers and wounding another. Local authorities claimed that two Taliban fighters were killed in the clash and five others were wounded.

June 25 Paktika Province: 15 police officers killed

Four police officers were killed and 11 others were wounded when a roadside bomb hit a convoy of Afghan forces in the center of Sarhawza District. The forces in the convoy were on their way to repel the Taliban attack on a security outpost in the outskirts of the district.

June 25 Farah Province: three soldiers killed

Three soldiers were killed and two others were wounded when a roadside bomb hit a Humvee, which had been part of a military convoy traveling from the province of Herat to Farah. The explosion took place in the Shawz wa Abkhorma village of Balablok District. After the explosion, Taliban strongholds in the area were bombed, resulting in the death of four insurgents, according to local officials.

June 25 Balkh Province: one pro-government militia member killed

The Taliban attacked the Baloch area of Zarey District, killing a pro-government militia commander, Muhammad Gul, and wounding another militia member. The Taliban were pushed back by militia forces despite the fact that reinforcements for backup never arrived.

June 25 Logar Province: 12 civilians killed

Two engineers working for the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs were killed in a Taliban ambush in the Porak area of Pol-e-Alam City, the provincial capital. The engineers were working on the construction of a school in the provincial capital.

June 25 Samangan Province: two pro-government militia members killed

The Taliban were preparing to attack the center of Roy Do Aab District, but they were ambushed by security forces in the village of Ahangaran, where clashes continued for three hours. Two pro-government militia members, including a commander, were killed and three others were wounded. Local authorities claimed that two Taliban fighters were also killed.

June 25 Zabul Province: 16o police officers killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost on the highway connecting Kandahar to Kabul in the Aman Pol area of Qalat City, the provincial capital. Two police officers were killed and two others were wounded during the hourlong battle between insurgents and security forces, but the post did not collapse. Local authorities claimed that the Taliban also suffered casualties.

June 24 Paktika Province: 13 police officer killed

A group of Taliban fighters were planning to attack security outposts in Yahya Khail District, but Afghan forces were prepared to repel them. One police officer was killed in the clash.

June 24 Faryab Province: one pro-government militia member killed

The Taliban ambushed a team of pro-government militia members in the Khair Abad village of Dawlat Abad District, killing one militia member and wounding another over an hour of fighting.

June 24 Baghlan Province: one soldier killed

Maj. Amanullah Rahmani, an Afghan soldier, was killed by the Taliban when he was traveling to visit his family after five months apart. Rahmani, 42, was taken prisoner in the Baghlan-e-Markazi District and killed on the spot. Rahmani was the father of four children.

June 24 Balkh Province: 18 police officer killed

Akhtar Muhammad, head of the police counterterrorism department in the Charbolak District, was killed by the Taliban in the Margin Tepa area of Balkh district while traveling in a private vehicle and wearing civilian clothes.

June 24 Jowzjan Province: six pro-government militia members killed

Six pro-government militia members including their commander were killed in an insider attack by three other militias in an outpost in the village of Gozar in Qosh Tepa District. The attacker joined the Taliban after carrying out the attack. All three attackers were members of groups affiliated with the Islamic State in Afghanistan and were surrendered to the government last year.

June 24 Ghor Province: two pro-government militia members killed

Two pro-government militia members were killed and two others were wounded in a Taliban attack on security outposts in the area of Gawkosh in Tolak District. Local authorities claimed that four Taliban fighters were also killed during the four-hour clash.

June 24 Baghlan Province: one police officer killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost in the Shamarq area of Pul-e-Khumri City, the provincial capital, killing one police officer and wounding another in two hours of battle. Reinforcement arrived on-time for backup and the Taliban didn’t suffer any casualties.

June 24 Badakhshan Province: one police officer killed

One police officer was killed and another was wounded during a military operation in the village of Naw Abad-e-Danishmandan in Argo District when a police vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.

June 23 Herat Province: three police officers killed

The Taliban attacked a police outpost in the Zeyaratjah village of Guzara District, killing three police officers and wounding another.

June 23 Sar-i-Pul Province: Two pro-government militias killed

Pro-government militia members ambushed the Taliban in the area of Tepa-e-Kamarak in Sozma Qala District. The insurgents were aware of the ambush and did not suffer any casualties. Two members of the militia were killed in clashes with the Taliban.

June 23 Kunduz Province: one police officer killed

A police officer killed his company commander Abdul Wahab in an insider attack after a verbal dispute inside the police headquarters in Kunduz City, the provincial capital. The attacker was able to escape from the headquarters and join the Taliban. The attacker served for six years as a bodyguard for Commander Abdul Wahab.

June 23 Herat Province: one civilian killed

One civilian was killed and two others were wounded when security guards of the district governor opened fire on a group of people who were protesting the beating of two Madrasa students by governor’s guards in the center of Gulran District.

June 23 Balkh Province: two civilians killed

The Taliban attacked a convoy of Afghan security forces in the Alamkhil area of Balkh District while hiding in shops in a bazaar nearby. Two civilians, including a child, were killed when the government forces responded to the Taliban attack.

June 22 Nangarhar Province: one civilian killed

A religious scholar was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in the fourth police district of Jalalabad City, the provincial capital. The attackers managed to escape from the area.

June 22 Badakhshan Province: four civilians killed

The Taliban killed four male members of a family in the Dara-e-Khostak area of Jurm District, an act of vengeance for the killing of two Taliban commanders by unknown gunmen. The bodies of the four civilians were not handed over to their family.

June 20 Nangarhar Province: two civilians killed

Two civilians were killed and 20 others were wounded when an explosive attached to a private vehicle went off in Jalalabad’s Second Police District.

June 19 Badakhshan Province: four pro-government militia members killed

The Taliban attacked the center of Shuhada District, where fighting continued for more than 24 hours. A village was captured by the Taliban and four pro-government militia members were killed. The Taliban were later pushed back and the village was recaptured. 

June 18 Paktika Province: one police officer killed

Mohammad Ayoub, the police chief of Barmal District, was killed and three police officers were wounded in a Taliban ambush in the Gulwal area of Yahya Khail District. Local authorities claimed that three Taliban fighters were also killed in the attack.

June 17 Herat Province: two police officers killed

Two police officers were killed during a military operation in Pashtun Zarghon and Aobe districts. Local authorities claimed that 12 Taliban fighters were killed and 15 others were injured in the operation.

June 15 Takhar Province: four civilians killed

Four civilians were killed and three others were wounded during a battle between the Taliban and Afghan forces in Ishkamish District, where several airstrikes were also carried out by the Afghan Air Force. Local authorities said that the civilians were killed in the airstrike. Local officials claimed that at least 20 Taliban fighters were killed during the clashes which continued in the district for several days.

June 15 Paktia Province: one civilian killed

Lala Jan, a tribal elder, was killed and two civilians were wounded when an explosive attached to his vehicle went off in the Shahre Naw Bazaar area of Samkani District.

June 13 Herat Province: one civilian killed

A vehicle hit a roadside bomb in the village of Gunah Abad in Aobe District killing one civilian. The mine was planted by the Taliban.

June 13 Nangarhar Province: five civilians and four police officers killed

Five civilians and four local police officers were killed when a suicide attacker targeted a police vehicle in the Sixth Police District of Jalalabad City, the provincial capital. At least 12 people, including three children and three police officers, were wounded. The suicide attacker was on foot.

June 13 Balkh Province: two security forces killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost in the Kohna Kaldar area of Kaldar District, where fighting continued for several hours. Reinforcements arriving in a Humvee hit a roadside bomb, which killed one pro-government militia member and one police officer. Four members of the security forces were also wounded. Local authorities claimed that the Taliban also suffered casualties.

June 13 Herat Province: one soldier killed

Two Taliban fighters on a motorcycle shot and killed an Afghan soldier in Gulran District. Two civilians, who were students at the local school, were also wounded in the firing. The attackers successfully fled the area.

June 12 Takhar Province: one pro-government militia member killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in Baharak District, where fighting continued for two hours. One member of the pro-government militia was killed in the clashes. Local authorities claimed that four Taliban fighters were killed and that the Taliban were pushed back.

June 12 Herat Province: two security forces killed

In an attempt to capture the area, the Taliban attacked the village of Gunah Abad in Aobe District. The attack was repelled by security forces, two members of which were killed in the clashes. Local authorities claimed that the Taliban suffered heavy casualties in the attack without providing exact figures.

June 12 Faryab Province: five pro-government militia members killed

The Taliban attacked three security outposts in the Ali Abad area of Gorziwan District, where fighting continued for two hours. Five pro-government militia members were killed and three others were wounded. One security outpost was captured by insurgents but was later retaken. Despite many calls for backup, reinforcements never arrived.

June 12 Takhar Province: two local police officers killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in Khwaja Ghar District in order to capture the district center, where fighting continued for nearly 10 hours. Two local police officers were killed and five others were wounded. Local authorities claimed that 10 Taliban members were killed in these clashes. The Taliban were briefly able to capture the security outposts, which were later recaptured by local security forces.

June 12 Badghis Province: three soldiers killed

The Taliban attacked the village of Asyab in Qades District, where fighting continued for several hours. Arriving reinforcements hit a roadside bomb in their Humvee. Three soldiers were killed and another was wounded.

June 12 Herat Province: one civilian and two local militia members killed

One civilian and two local militia members were killed in clashes between two armed groups in Ghoryan District. The reason for the clashes was unclear.

June 12 Nangarhar Province: one civilian killed

A religious scholar was killed by armed men in Khewa District. He was on his way to the mosque for morning prayer.

June 11 Kandahar Province: 13 soldiers killed

The Taliban attacked army outposts in Khakrez District, killing 13 soldiers in several hours of fighting.

June 11 Paktika Province: one civilian killed

A police vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb in Wazi Khwa District, killing one civilian and wounding three police officers.

June 11 Kunduz Province: six soldiers killed

An army outpost was bombed by an American airstrike in the Ismail Qeshalq area of Imam Sahib District. Six soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded. A joint patrol of American and Afghan forces came under effective fire. The ground force requested air support to suppress the onslaught of machine-gun fire, which turned out to be coming from another group of Afghan security forces, said Col. Dave Butler, spokesman for U.S. Forces Afghanistan. “This operation was extensively planned and coordinated with U.S. and Afghan security forces to prevent an event like this from occurring. We regret the tragic loss of our Afghan partners. A joint investigation board will be convened to determine the factors that contributed to this incident and to help prevent future tragedies,” he added. There was no military operation in the area and no clash with the Taliban, according to local officials.

June 11 Zabul Province: three security forces killed

In an unsuccessful attempt to capture the district, the Taliban attacked security outposts in Daychopan District. Three members of the security forces were killed and two others were wounded in the attack. Local authorities claimed that 40 Taliban fighters were killed and 13 others were wounded in the airstrikes.

June 11 Kabul Province: 14 police officer killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost in Shakardara District, killing one police officer and wounding another.

June 11 Kandahar Province: 34 civilians killed

Two women, two men and two children were killed when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle in the village of Panezo in Dand District. They were traveling from Kandahar City, the provincial capital.

June 10 Herat Province: 18 soldier killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in the Ganj and Khwaja Joy areas of Keshk Robat Sangi District, killing seven members of the border forces and wounding 10 others in several hours of fighting.

June 9 Ghazni Province: one child killed

One child was killed and seven other children were wounded while playing with an unexploded mortar shell that went off in the Charada area of Wayez District. Some of the children are in critical condition.

June 9 Ghazni Province: one civilian killed

The Taliban stopped a car in the Qiyaq area of Jaghatu District and kidnapped a university student who was traveling to Kabul. Police later found his body in the same area where he was kidnapped.

June 9 Herat Province: 15 border forces killed

A roadside bomb hit a Humvee of border forces in the Islam Qala area of Kohsan District when they were trying to provide backup to a Taliban attack on a nearby Chakhar Gah security outpost. Four border forces were killed and seven others were wounded in the attack.

June 7 Ghor Province: 14 militia members killed

The Taliban attacked the Posht Noor area in Dawlatyar District, killing 14 pro-government militia members and wounding two others who were defending their area from insurgents. People in the area were asked by the Taliban to raise their flags and collect taxes for them, but they rejected the offer and were therefore attacked.

June 6 Ghor Province: one soldier killed

Fawad Andarabi, the commander of an army battalion in western Afghanistan, was killed in a Taliban attack in the Somak area of Dawlatyar District. Andarabi was leading an operation in the area to clear Taliban.

June 5 Paktia Province: 13 commando killed

An Afghan commando was taken prisoner by the Taliban in Ahmadkhail District while he was visiting his family during Eid holidays. He was killed the same day by insurgents.

June 5 Logar Province: four civilians killed

A roadside bomb hit a vehicle in Daber area of Charkh District, killing two women and two men. The bomb was planted by the Taliban, according to local officials.

June 4 Baghlan Province: one civilian killed

An explosive attached to a motorcycle went off in the district of Nahrin while people were leaving a mosque after the Eid prayer, killing one civilian and wounding seven others.

June 3 Kabul City: five civilians killed

An explosive attached to a shuttle bus transporting government employees went off in Darul Aman area of Kabul, killing five civilians and wounding 10 others.

June 2 Kabul City: 13 civilians killed

Two civilians were killed and 24 others were wounded in three back to back explosions in Khoshhal Khan area of Kabul City. The first explosion was caused by an explosive attached to a students’ shuttle bus, killing a child who was a street vendor, and wounding 10 civilians. Then two other bombs exploded in the same area, killing a civilian and wounding 14 people. Two journalists who went to cover the first explosion were also among those wounded.

June 2 Kunduz Province: one police officer killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost in Madrasa area of Ali Abad District, killing one local police officer and wounding two others in two hours of fighting. The Taliban fled the area after reinforcements arrived.

June 2 Wardak Province: three civilians killed

The Taliban opened fire on a vehicle in Jalrez District, along the highway connecting Kabul to Bamyan Province. Three civilians were killed and two others were wounded. Civilians have been targeted by the Taliban on the highway before.

June 1 Baghlan Province: 23 police officers killed

The Taliban attacked and captured a military base in Tapa-e-Pashai-e-Ha village in Pul-i-Khumri City, the provincial capital, after an hour of fighting.

Nine local police officers were killed and seven others were wounded in the clashes. The Taliban seized all weapons and equipment from the base.

The Taliban attacked the center of Qarqin District from three directions in a coordinated assault that lasted for five hours. One pro-government militia member was killed and two others were wounded in the clashes.

June 1 Sar-i-Pul Province: one police officer killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost in Sang-e-Toda area of Sar-i-Pul City, the provincial capital, killing one local police officer and wounding two others in nearly three hours of battle.
